Hi, I’m Dr. Jim Plessman.

For decades as a doctor of dental surgery, I used trigger point therapy (i.e., anesthetic injections) to help people with head, neck and face pain and dysfunction.

Although it was the best option western dental medicine had to offer, the problem was, I was only treating pain symptoms, not the root cause. Many of my patients never fully healed; their pain kept coming back. It was frustrating! There had to be a better way.

Thankfully, my quest for a true solution led me to acupuncture.

Now I’m having the time of my life! Since 1999, I’ve used this ancient, gentle practice to liberate hundreds of people from pain and the stress, despair and sleepless nights that often go with it.

And, believe me, I never tire of hearing people say, “That didn’t hurt at all, what was I waiting for?!” while floating out the door after their acupuncture treatment, giddy with feel-good excitement and confidence.

Clients receive the utmost gentle care and understanding with Dr. Jim Plessman, as well as ample time to relax and ease into their acupuncture treatments. That way, people suffering with acute or chronic pain—and side effects like depression, anxiety, despair, frustration and irritability—have a safe oasis to unearth and finally heal the root causes of their lingering discomfort.

Treating each client as the unique, special person they are, Dr. Jim loves seeing their eyes fill with joy at the sudden, profound release of pain that’s been gripping their bodies. And he relishes the fun rush of energy they feel with every treatment!

Dr. Jim began his acupuncture practice in 1999 and is board certified with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

He received his Certification of Acupuncture in the Doctor’s Program at Tri-State Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine, New York City, in 1999. And in 2012, received his Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture, Newton, MA, the oldest acupuncture school in the country.

For 40 years, he was a Doctor of Dental Surgery. Before retiring in 2019, he practiced general dentistry and specialized in TMJ (temporomandibular joint) trigger point therapy to heal pain and discomfort of the head, face and neck.

A highlight of his dental career was enrolling in Dr. Janet Travell, M.D.’s continuing education courses in trigger point therapy. Along with being President John F. Kennedy’s personal White House physician, Dr. Travell pioneered techniques for the treatment of myofascial pain, including anesthetic needling, and was a brilliant and empowering mentor.

A Nebraska native, Dr. Jim lives in Mystic with his loving wife, Connie, and their two cozy charcoal cats, Sterling and Misty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force—known as chi or qi (chee)—that flows through pathways (meridians) in your body.

By inserting very fine needles into precise points along these meridians, acupuncture unblocks stagnations such as pain and disease, brings the body back into harmony with itself, and allows your energy flow to re-balance. Thus improving your physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Surprise! Acupuncture doesn’t hurt. Unfortunately, though, because people fear needles (no doubt because of getting “stuck” by doctors growing up), they assume they’ll feel the same jab of pain with acupuncture. Not so. Acupuncture needles are tiny, finer than even than your skin pores, with a rounded tip that glides in easily. However, you’ll likely have a sensation from the needles when inserted. A little pressure, known as de qi, indicates the acupuncture needle has accessed the meridian and initiated the flow of healing, harmonizing energy in your body.

Keep in mind, nearly at the instant the acupuncture needles are inserted, your body also releases 20 different feel-good endorphins that immediately melt tension, stress and pain. 100% Natural and effective, you’ll be relieved and relaxed in minutes flat.

Is acupuncture safe?

Absolutely, when done by a trained, licensed professional. Also note, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles and restricts their use to licensed practitioners. The FDA requires acupuncture needles to be sterile, nontoxic and labeled for single use. Sometimes, you might experience a little soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. However, this is amply outweighed by the immediate and profound relief and relaxation you’ll feel.

How do I get started with you?

Easy! Simply call 860-326-5864 and our friendly staff will book your appointment. Then arrive at your appointed time 15 minutes early to check in and complete a brief health questionnaire.

Do I need to bring anything?

No! Just wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.

What happens during my first 45-minute appointment?

I want to get to know you first! Together, we’ll review your health questionnaire and I may ask a few additional questions. Then, I’ll explain how acupuncture works and show you the needles I use, so you can see for yourself—they’re tiny! Like kittens’ whiskers!

We’ll start with a very simple technique to help you relax right away. You’ll be amazed. Then I’ll gently ask questions as I continue your treatment to isolate and relieve your pain. As we go, you’ll feel a significant release of stress, tension and pain. Your treatment will last about 30 to 40 minutes. Then we’ll talk about the next best steps to help you continue your progress and alleviate your pain for good.

What happens during my subsequent 45-minute treatments?

Picking up from your last appointment, I’ll ask more questions as we gently isolate and move your pain out of your body. I recommend booking at least weekly while we’re actively alleviating your pain. You may wish to book twice a week to accelerate your success! Once you’re pain-free, I recommend a monthly maintenance appointment to keep your body in tune.

I’m nervous, is there an easier way to get started?

Yes! Book my 20-Minute Stress Reliever Intro appointment. It’s simple, easy and so effective, you’ll be floating out the door wondering why you ever thought you felt any stress to begin with. Seriously, it’s that good.
